Lebanon Legal.

An overview of the Lebanese legal system, its sources, its courts, and its personality.

Lebanese law is rooted in the continental civil-law tradition, with strong French influences layered over Ottoman-era codifications and the personal-status laws of eighteen recognised religious communities.

01

Sources of law

  • The Constitution
  • International treaties duly ratified
  • Codified statutes (civil, commercial, criminal, procedural, tax)
  • Regulations and decrees
  • Case law and doctrine as persuasive authorities
02

Court structure

The judiciary is organised in civil, commercial, criminal, administrative, and religious jurisdictions, with a Court of Cassation at the summit of the civil and criminal branches and a Council of State for administrative matters.

03

Personal status

Matters of marriage, divorce, custody, and inheritance for members of religious communities are handled by dedicated personal-status courts applying each community's own rules.
